CIT Facilities

A Bit of History
In 1988 United World Mission (UWM) moved from St. Petersburg, Florida, to western North Carolina to an unused and nearly abandoned piece of property situated in the foothills of the Blue Ridge mountains between Asheville and Charlotte. The 28 acres and nine buildings originally was home to an orphanage which was established in the early 1940s.

After many renovations, in the fall of 1997 the board of UWM felt it was important that CIT operate independently and began the process of moving the UWM headquarters to Charlotte, North Carolina. It was then that the large, well-equipped facility became home for the Center for Intercultural Training. Its history as a full-service orphanage transitioned well into a full-service missionary training organization!

The Facilities Today
Renovations are now almost completed on CIT's 28 acre training grounds. What was formerly known as the Peru building is now home to 10 attractively appointed, two-bedroom apartments in CIT's Boyer Apartment building. The large orphanage dormitory has been newly renovated and is now CIT's Sorensen Dorm. CIT's cafeteria has been one of the last buildings to undergo renovation, but even that is nearing completion.

CIT's former Education building that housed our classroom is now home to our new Student Center. The classroom now is held in our main Correll Administration building and has been overhauled with many of the new technologies that make teaching easier for our instructors and more pleasant for our students.

Also included on the property is a small computer lab for students who do not bring their own computers. These computers are equipped with internet access and are open for student use most days until 10 p.m. We also have a modest fitness center available to students that includes a few cardio-vascular machines and some weight equipment.

For the summertime activity, CIT has a swimming pool that is open to students and staff and their families. The pool generally opens around Memorial Day and closes around Labor Day (or when the weather turns cold). There is also a tennis and volleyball court. For those who enjoy walking and/or hiking, the area is perfect for that type of outdoor activity.

Location
CIT is located in the foothills of the beautiful Blue Ridge mountains in Union Mills, North Carolina, approximately an hour east and south of Asheville and 90 minutes west of the Charlotte airport. For specific directions, click here.

"I need people...and community living is such a great thing! There are people who have been through the same difficulties and joys. It is a blessing to be interdependent—it gives me a feel of what I want to strive for on my team on the field."
